Despite the fact that they ar an American band, Virgin Steele ar bit by bit comely a European metal phenomenon. The mathematical group -- perennially lED by vocalist/keyboardist David DeFeis since their inception in the fall of 1981 -- is a fine instance of a heavy alloy stripe that assimilates classical influences into its romanticistic, symphonic-based reasoned. Virgin Steele began humbly with two self-released albums which, later beingness picked up for external distribution, brought in combined sales of well-nigh four hundred,000 units and critical congratulations from the alloy underground. British metal mag Kerrang! level compared them to early Judas Priest. The group's intriguing blend of classical, metallic element, and a touch of prog manifested itself amply for the first time on their tierce album, the groundbreaking ceremony Noble Savage. This record album marked a change for the band in the departure of original guitar player Jack Starr -- whose more than traditional anthems clashed with DeFeis' grandiose epics -- and the arrival of gifted shredder Edward Pursino. The undermentioned record album, Long time of Consent, was more than commercial-grade than its predecessor, attempting to appeal to both hard-core and mainstream metallic element fans. Management and judge problems prompted a hiatus which over in the early '90s, when German stake rekindled the discharge for the band. While the ensuing record album Life Among the Ruins stayed closer to the '80s, the undermentioned 2 records, The Marriage of Heaven & Hell, Parts 1 and 2 were powerful epics which cemented the mathematical group as unmatchable of the superlative bands in the musical style. The latter record album pronounced the difference of original drummer Frank Ayvazian and new skinbeater Frank Girlchriest. Marriage 2 sold very well in Europe and strike number fin on the Japanese metal charts. House of Atreus Act 1 followed in 1999. The second volume in the House of Atreus Act series appeared 2 geezerhood later.

Canadian comedy's fatal flaw
REACH FOR THE TOP: There were high-fives all around at the CBC this week with the announcement that 20th Century Fox Television had bought the U.S. rights for an adaptation of Little Mosque On The Prairie. Apparently, there had been interest in the show south of the border for some time before Fox and Westwind Pictures announced the deal at Banffs World Television Festival. The Canadian producer had also been negotiating with Fox before the Hollywood writers strike forced them to take a temporary break.
According to a Hollywood Reporter story, the deal doesnt preclude the original Canadian version from being aired stateside and Westwinds Mary Darling, executive producer of the CBC version, said that they were pleased with the deal.
Fox got the creative vision of the show, that it has to be funny while it treads sensitively on certain Muslim issues," Darling told the Hollywood Reporter.
Im aware that Canadians and especially Canadian media executives are programmed to say things like this, but heres where I really start to worry. Treading sensitively might sound like a prudent course for a politician, but its a sure recipe for bad comedy, and Id like to hope that whoever ends up making Foxs version of Little Mosque no writer has been attached to the show yet will not tread lightly around any issues; Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, Jewish, Jain, Hindu or Zoroastrian.
I am not a fan of the CBC show. Not because of its subject matter or setting, but because its simply dire comedy with limp, lifeless, "ba-dump-dump" comic set-up and delivery that feels dated by managing to channel the stalest essence of 3-camera laugh-track sitcoms in a single-camera, laugh-track-free setting an unrewarding sleight-of-hand that Canadian comedy is too fond of replicating.
The best comedy is cruel and irreverent and Fox, for all its many flaws (Family Guy, Im looking at you), is aware of this irrevocable comic law. Anyone hoping to make a comedy that treads sensitively would have to either be a fool or a Canadian. This is, after all, a country thats made itself an international laughing stock in the past few months with a series of Star Chamber trials convened by national and provincial Human Rights Commissions aiming to proscribe free speech and freedom of the press, all in the interest of making sure we all tread sensitively. Canadians like to flatter themselves that were a funny people; were funny, all right, but in all the wrong ways, Im sorry to say.

"Indiana Jones" cracks whip at box office opening
That tally ranks as the fourth highest-grossing Thursday debut on record and puts "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" on track to possibly match or overtake last year's "Pirates of the Caribbean" film as the biggest opening on a U.S. Memorial Day holiday weekend.
The last big release from Viacom Inc's Paramount, "Iron Man," opened three weeks ago with $98.6 million in U.S.-Canadian receipts its first Friday-through-Sunday frame -- a sum that the latest "Indiana Jones" film is expected to surpass.
Unlike the new "Indiana Jones" film, "Iron Man" was fully financed by Marvel Studios, which paid Paramount a flat fee to market and distribute its film. Thus, Paramount has much more at stake riding on the success of its latest release.
"Crystal Skull," directed by Steven Spielberg, is the fourth movie in the beloved and lucrative movie franchise that began in 1981 with "Raiders of the Lost Ark," and is the first to hit the big screen in 19 years.
Harrison Ford reprises his title role as the bullwhip-cracking archeologist who hates snakes, and reunites with actress Karen Allen, his co-star from the first adventure. In the new film, set during the 1950s Cold War era, he competes with an evil KGB agent played by Cate Blanchett to find a skull endowed with mystic powers.
Box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers, said the film's opening Thursday performance was strong enough to bode well for its commercial potential but not so strong as to diminish its weekend audience.
If its Friday-through-Monday box office tally crosses the $140 million mark, the film would exceed last year's Walt Disney Co's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" as the biggest North American opening yet for the four-day Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Madonna asks for delay in David Banda adoption case
Madonna asks for delay in David Banda adoption case
Virgin Mary has asked a Malawian court to delay a hearing to finalise her espousal of 2-year-old toddler Jacques Louis David Banda, whom she adopted from the South African nation 18 months ago, a attorney conclude to the case has said.
The pop superstar’s Malawian law tauten reportedly filed an application requesting the Heights Court in Lilongwe hear her adoption of Banda on May 15 instead of April 22, as primitively scheduled, the lawyer told Reuters, speaking on condition of namelessness.
The reason for the delay, says the attorney, is Madonna’s pauperization to journey to the United States for concern reasons.
